HISTORY OF KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY
Kyambogo University (KYU) was established with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society.
The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo – (UPK)
UPK started in 1928 as a small technical school on the Makerere Hill and was transferred to Kyambogo Hill in 1958 as Kampala Technical Institute. It was renamed Uganda Technical College and finally Uganda Polytechnic, Kyambogo (UPK).
Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK)
ITEK with a motto “NOTHING WITHOUT LABOUR” started as a one-roomed Government Teacher Training College (GTTC) in 1948 in Nyakasura, Fort Portal and transferred to Ruharo and then Ntare Hill all in Mbarara, western Uganda in 1949 and 1950 respectively. After about four years it had to be moved to Kyambogo hill due to the projected high numbers of students. It is clear that in 1952 the then Director of education proposed the foundation of a Central Government Teachers Training College at Kyambogo to produce a new type of teachers with practical training in handcraft. Regarding the choice of the Site at Kyambogo, it was advantageous to have the CGTTC near the new Kampala Technical College. In fact, it was to become the Uganda Institute of Education. It transformed into a National Teachers College in 1965 to start handling Diploma Courses. The creation of new NTCs around the country in the mid-1980s created room for the Institute to concentrate on programmes for Teacher Trainers through in-service degree programs. In Sept 1987, the then principle of ITEK wrote to the Minister of Education to indicate that the institute was ready to take on Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree courses for the 1987 intake for in-service students. The Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo was finally legally born following the passing of the Institute of Education act. 1987 which made ITEK an autonomous institute for the first time.
Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE)
UNISE on the other hand started as a Department of Special Education at ITEK in 1988 and later became an autonomous institution by act of parliament in 1998.
The three institutions were merged to form Kyambogo University, the third public university to be established in Uganda.

“We struggle for the future”
Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious English Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics.
The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses.
In 1949, it became a University College affiliated to the University College of London, offering courses leading to the general degrees of its then mother institution.
With the establishment of the University of East Africa in June 29, 1963, the special relationship with the University of London came to a close and degrees of the University of East Africa were instituted.
On July 1, 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to its own awards. Makerere University offers not only day but also evening and external study programmes to a student body of about 35,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates (both Ugandan and foreign). It is also a very active centre for research.
The University transitioned from the Faculty-based to the collegiate system on 1st July 2011 and as of Friday 30th December 2011, Makerere University officially transformed into a Collegiate University with 9 Constituent Colleges and as at 1st July 2014, 10 Constituent Colleges including the School of Law, all operating as semi-autonomous units of the University.

The Islamic University in Uganda was opened in the year 1988 by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Uganda (GOU) and the OIC. In 1990, the Parliament of Uganda enacted a law, The Islamic University in Uganda Act (cap 131, Laws of Uganda), formally establishing the University in Uganda.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) is an authentic Christian institution established by the Church of Uganda in 1997 in response to a call for quality university education with a Christian perspective.
Uganda Christian University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. The local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
International partnerships were part of the Bishop Tucker Theological College’s missionary history. The Church Mission Society teamed up with Ugandan leaders and others to assure the College had the necessary intellectual and other capital.
By the late 1990s, the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through university education - not only educating clergy but other professionals as well.
In 2004, UCU became the first private university to be chartered or accredited by the government of Uganda.
Located in Mukono, less than an hour’s drive from the capital city Kampala, Uganda Christian University is one of Uganda's leading teaching and research universities.

We aim at ensuring that learners reach their full potential and to create an atmosphere where learning is fun by offering a rich, varied and meaningful curriculum.
We live in an ever changing world and we need to prepare our children for the future, enabling them to access lifelong learning. Whilst the children’s learning is our first priority, we also offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities so that all children can achieve and shine in the field of their choice – music, sport or the arts – and we develop the children’s emotional literacy and social skills through all that we do in school to enable them to become responsible and positive members of the society in which they live.
Working closely with parents and careers is an important facet of our work in enabling the success of our children. We believe that good communication is the key to an effective partnership, and we are always happy to meet you and discuss any concerns you may have.
To provide all children with an exciting range of experiences and opportunities to recognise their own potential in all areas, especially their creativity and skills regardless of their needs.
To provide a broad, balanced and creative curriculum this not only reflects the requirements of the National Curriculum but inspires and develops children to realise their own goals.
Fully utilise all the available resources to create and sustain a positive stimulating learning environment.
Promote professional relationships and respect between all the school’s stakeholders so modeling a positive attitude for our children.
To Promote and maintain a positive image of the school within the Community.
To enable children to develop self-confidence and self-expression so empowering them to make decisions about their learning and development and also form positive relationships.
To be a values-led learning community, in which our shared understanding and practice ensures that everybody feels secure and significant and develops a strong sense of our common humanity together with a respect for diversity and difference.
To be a school where all success is celebrated, and where high expectations ensure that everybody is challenged and supported to achieve their very best.
To develop an evolving, stimulating and culturally-rich curriculum which responds to the needs and interests of all learners, ensuring that they enjoy their education and are equipped to achieve economic and spiritual well-being in a rapidly changing world.
To be a school where children are kept safe, healthy and equipped to make informed and positive life choices with increasing independence throughout their lives.
To be an inclusive, welcoming and thriving school at the heart of the local community, so that resources are shared for the benefit of all and everyone is encouraged to work together and make a positive contribution.
To become a more environmentally-responsible community, working actively towards sustainability and a sense of global citizenship
